Dry Brushing

Want rejuvenated and soft skin? Dry brushing is an option that offers many benefits. But before you grab a brush and start going to town on your skin, it’s important to know how to do it correctly to get the most benefit.

In case you don’t know, dry brushing is a daily body massage with a dry, stiff-bristled brush that helps eliminate flaky skin, increase circulation, move your lymph, increase detoxification effectiveness and improve the appearance of cellulite.

WHY TO DRY BRUSH:
Improves skin tone and texture. Dry brushing exfoliates and improves circulation, making your skin glow. This process is gentler on the skin than scrubbing in the hot shower! Hot showers can inflame the skin and even strip away oils and fats that keep your skin looking healthy. Forget your in-shower loofah and body scrubs, this will ensure you have silky-smooth skin all year round!

Stimulates your lymphatic system. Dry brushing your skin will kick start your lymphatic system, which helps you remove toxins from the body. This is especially helpful during a detox. Dry skin brushing helps to break down any trapped toxins from within the body and help your body eliminate them through its usual elimination channels.

Unclogs pores and decongests skin which helps your skin absorb more nutrients. Daily skin brushing promotes healthy, breathing skin. It's a real treat for the largest organ in our bodies!

Stimulates your nervous system. Much like a massage, the practice of dry brushing can leave you feeling energized and refreshed!

It’s a practice of self care, and at the very least, for those super busy people, it gives you a few extra moments of time to just love on yourself. When I dry brush, I’ll listen to an audiobook, a PepTalk or motivation. I use this time to take care of myself in body, mind and spirit.

HOW TO DRY BRUSH:

Purchase a natural (not synthetic) bristle brush with a long handle so it can reach all areas of your body. I like this soft bristle jute brush or this boar bristle set.

The best time to dry brush is before a shower. Get naked and stand in a bathtub or tiled surface to catch the falling skin. Do not dry brush over cracked or cut skin.

Begin brushing with light sweeping motions. Start at your feet and move in long sweeping motions toward your heart. Always brush toward your heart.

Brush several times in each area, overlapping as you go. Take care as you brush over more sensitive areas, like breasts. Your skin will become less sensitive the more you dry brush.

Once you've brushed your entire body, jump in the shower. (I like to alternate between the hottest water temperature I can tolerate and the coldest. This stimulates blood circulation, bringing more blood to the top layers of the skin.)

After getting out of the shower, pat dry skin and apply a natural moisturizer like coconut oil or I use doTerra's Beautiful Body Mist...smells delish, is very nourishing to the skin and has essential oil benefits. I also love dōTerra’s Body Butter for extra moisturizing protection.

Continue to dry brush your entire body every day. Twice a day is recommended for best results.

Clean your brush with non-toxic soap and water once a week. I use the OnGuard Foaming Hand Soap, a great non-toxic cleansing agent. Leave to dry in a clean, sunny spot to avoid any mildew accumulation on your brush.
